Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1979 and raised in Detroit, where her talent became apparent at an early age. She appeared on Star Search as a child and performed with her aunt Gladys Knight before beginning a professional recording career while still in her teens. Her calm stage presence, understated vocal delivery and instinct for contemporary production quickly distinguished her from many of the bigger-voiced R&B singers of the period.

Her 1994 debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, introduced Aaliyah nationally through the hits Back & Forth and At Your Best (You Are Love). Two years later she made the creative leap that would define her legacy. One in a Million paired her with emerging producers and writers Timbaland and Missy Elliott, whose unconventional rhythms and spacious arrangements perfectly suited Aaliyah’s controlled, conversational vocals. If Your Girl Only Knew, One in a Million, 4 Page Letter and The One I Gave My Heart To helped make the album a landmark of late-1990s R&B.

Aaliyah’s influence expanded beyond albums. Are You That Somebody?, recorded for the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack, became one of her most acclaimed recordings and earned a Grammy nomination. In 2000 she starred opposite Jet Li in Romeo Must Die and contributed several songs to its soundtrack. Try Again became her first and only Billboard Hot 100 number-one single and further established the combination of Aaliyah’s voice and Timbaland’s production as one of the era’s most distinctive partnerships. She also moved further into acting, later appearing in Queen of the Damned.

Her self-titled third album arrived in July 2001 and pushed her music into darker, more electronic territory. We Need a Resolution, Rock the Boat and More Than a Woman demonstrated an artist continuing to evolve rather than repeating earlier successes. On August 25, 2001, after completing filming for the Rock the Boat video in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and eight others were killed when their plane crashed shortly after takeoff. She was 22 years old.

Aaliyah’s impact continued to grow after her death. Her approach to rhythm, vocal layering, fashion and music-video imagery became a reference point for later generations of R&B and pop artists. Posthumous releases including Miss You kept her work on the charts, and much of her catalog became broadly available on streaming services in 2021. In 2025, Blackground Records 2.0 released Gone with Tank, using previously recorded Aaliyah vocals.
