About Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz has spent more than three decades building one of modern rock’s most recognizable sounds. Born Leonard Albert Kravitz in New York City, he developed as a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist with a musical vocabulary shaped by rock, soul, funk and R&B. Rather than separating those traditions, Kravitz made their overlap central to his identity, often writing, arranging, producing and playing many of the instruments on his recordings.
His debut album Let Love Rule arrived in 1989 and introduced a retro-minded but personal sound at a time when mainstream rock was moving in very different directions. Mama Said followed in 1991 and produced It Ain’t Over ’Til It’s Over, the soulful single that reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The 1993 album Are You Gonna Go My Way pushed Kravitz further into the international spotlight, with its title track becoming one of the decade’s defining guitar-driven rock songs and videos.
The album 5 opened another major chapter. I Belong to You, Fly Away and his cover of American Woman expanded his audience across pop and rock radio. Fly Away won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1999, beginning a remarkable run of four consecutive wins in that category. American Woman won the following year, Again won in 2001 and Dig In completed the streak in 2002. Kravitz’s official biography notes that the achievement set a record for consecutive wins in the category by a male performer.
Kravitz continued releasing albums and touring internationally while moving easily between heavy guitar tracks, funk grooves and intimate ballads. Songs including Again, Can’t Get You Off My Mind, I’ll Be Waiting, Low and The Chamber showed the range of a catalog that has never fit neatly into a single genre. His work also expanded beyond music into acting, design and photography, including film roles in Precious, The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Blue Electric Light, released in 2024, continued that long-running approach to self-contained musicianship and was followed by new videos and remixes, including the 2025 official video for Let It Ride.
