About Prince
Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1958 and grew into one of the most distinctive artists in popular music. A singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Prince built a career around creative independence and a sound that could move freely among funk, rock, R&B, pop, soul and new wave. From the beginning, his records reflected unusual control over the creative process; his 1978 debut For You was produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince.
His commercial breakthrough accelerated with the 1979 album Prince and the single I Wanna Be Your Lover. The double album 1999 pushed him further into the pop mainstream with 1999 and Little Red Corvette, while 1984's Purple Rain transformed Prince and the Revolution into global superstars. When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and the title song became one of the defining performances of his career.
Prince refused to stay inside one sound. Around the World in a Day moved into psychedelic pop, Parade produced the minimalist funk smash Kiss, and the ambitious Sign o' the Times showcased his range as a writer, performer and studio innovator. Later projects including Batman, Diamonds and Pearls, The Gold Experience, Musicology and 3121 continued a catalog that ultimately stretched across dozens of albums. He also wrote and produced music for other artists, helping shape hits and careers far beyond the records released under his own name.
His influence extended well beyond recording. Prince became famous for electrifying concerts, guitar playing, visual presentation and a persistent fight for artistic ownership and control. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the same year that Musicology returned him to the center of mainstream music. Prince died in 2016, but his enormous Vault of unreleased recordings has allowed his estate to continue presenting new archival projects and performances.
In August 2026, the Prince Estate and Legacy Recordings released Timeless, a collection of rare and previously unreleased recordings spanning 1977 through 2016. The release was accompanied by a new official video for The Guilty Ones, recorded at Paisley Park in 2007.
