Eleven people connected to the Glenville High School football team have been charged following an alleged theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Grove City.
Grove City Police said two adults and nine juveniles face theft charges after investigators reviewed an incident involving members of the Cleveland high school football program.
Police reports and local coverage indicate merchandise valued at approximately $4,500 was taken from the store.
The incident occurred while the Glenville football team was in Central Ohio for a game. Store employees contacted police after a group of juveniles allegedly took merchandise from the sporting goods store.
Investigators later worked to identify the people involved. Police said Glenville football coaches assisted authorities with identifying individuals shown in store surveillance video.
The investigation resulted in charges against nine juveniles and two adults.
Glenville High School is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and has one of Ohio’s most prominent high school football programs.
The case drew additional attention after surveillance footage and police information about the incident became public. Local television stations in Cleveland and Columbus reported on the investigation and subsequent charges.
The charges are allegations, and the individuals charged are entitled to the legal process before any determination of guilt.
The juveniles involved are handled differently from adult defendants under Ohio law, and identifying information for minors is generally restricted.
Grove City Police released additional details as the investigation progressed and said the football program cooperated with investigators.
The incident occurred outside Greater Cleveland, but the involvement of Glenville students and adults connected the case directly to Cleveland.
School and team officials have not changed the criminal process, which remains under the jurisdiction of authorities handling the Grove City case.
The investigation moved from an initial reported shoplifting incident to formal charges after police reviewed evidence and identified the people they believe were involved.
