Kacey Musgraves honored Dolly Parton during her Boston concert with a heartfelt performance of “9 to 5,” paying tribute to one of country music’s most important artists.
The tribute took place during Musgraves’ Aug. 28 concert at TD Garden on her Middle of Nowhere Tour. Rolling Stone reported that Musgraves spoke about Parton’s influence before performing the 1980 classic.
Parton died Aug. 25 at age 80. Her death has led to tributes across country music, with performers revisiting songs that helped make her one of the genre’s most recognizable figures.
Musgraves has long represented a modern branch of country music that values strong songwriting and individuality, two qualities closely associated with Parton. Covering “9 to 5” allowed Musgraves to honor that connection through one of Parton’s most familiar recordings.
The song was written for the 1980 film of the same name, which starred Parton alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. It became a major crossover hit and remains one of Parton’s signature songs.
