Lionel Richie checked himself into a St. Louis-area hospital after his Aug. 29 performance at The Muny, according to multiple reports.
A source close to Richie’s tour told ABC News that the 77-year-old singer entered the hospital out of an abundance of caution. TMZ and People reported that Richie was being treated in an intensive care unit while doctors conducted tests.
TMZ reported that doctors were investigating possible slight dehydration. That information is a reported possibility rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Richie’s representatives had not publicly announced a specific medical diagnosis in the reporting reviewed by CLE Radio.
Concertgoers told TMZ that Richie appeared to struggle near the end of the St. Louis performance and requested a chair during the final song, “All Night Long.”
The hospitalization follows an earlier health problem during Richie’s June 24 concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. He told that audience he felt dizzy and strange before ending the performance early. Two subsequent concerts were postponed while he rested.
Richie later returned to the tour and told fans in July that he was doing well. His next scheduled concert is a Sept. 26 date with Earth, Wind & Fire at Chase Center in San Francisco. As of the latest reports reviewed, that concert remained scheduled.
Fans will now be watching for an official health update from Richie or his representatives and confirmation of his upcoming performances.
