Several Northeast Ohio schools are closed or operating on adjusted schedules Thursday as extreme heat continues across the region. Closings and schedule changes were reported in Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage, Wayne and Stark counties. Many of the affected schools are in older buildings without full air conditioning. Classroom temperatures have climbed into uncomfortable or unsafe ranges during the recent stretch of hot and humid weather. Some districts dismissed students early Wednesday, while others decided to close buildings Thursday.
Heat Forces More Schedule Changes
The heat has been unusually intense for the beginning of September. High humidity has made conditions feel even warmer. District officials must consider indoor classroom temperatures, transportation conditions and the safety of students and staff when deciding whether to close. Buildings without central air conditioning are especially vulnerable during multi-day heat events. Fans and portable cooling equipment can help, but they may not be enough when outdoor temperatures remain high throughout the day. School administrators have also adjusted athletic practices and outdoor activities.
Older School Buildings Face Cooling Challenges
The closures come during the first weeks of the new school year. That timing has created scheduling challenges for families and staff. The heat-related disruptions are occurring at the same time as a severe thunderstorm threat. Storms could bring temporary relief from the heat, but they also create additional concerns including strong winds, lightning and power outages. Parents should continue checking directly with their school district for updated information. Closing lists can change quickly as conditions develop.
