Power Restored at Baldwin Wallace University After Campus Outage

Power has been restored at Baldwin Wallace University after an electrical problem left several buildings on the Berea campus without electricity during the opening days of the academic year.

The outage began Monday night after a failure in the university’s electrical grid. Buildings on the south side of campus were affected, creating disruptions for students living and attending classes in that area.

Students told WKYC that the outage affected normal campus routines as the university worked to restore service. The disruption occurred during a period of unusually hot weather in Northeast Ohio, adding to concerns for students in buildings without normal electrical service.

Baldwin Wallace officials worked on the campus electrical system while students received updates about the outage. WKYC later reported that power had been restored.

The university is located in Berea in Cuyahoga County and serves undergraduate and graduate students. The outage occurred shortly after students returned for the fall semester, making the timing especially noticeable for students moving into residence halls and beginning classes.

An electrical grid failure can affect lighting, cooling, internet equipment, elevators and other building systems, depending on the location and extent of the problem. Baldwin Wallace’s outage was concentrated on part of the campus rather than the entire university.

The incident also coincided with a regional heat wave that led schools throughout Northeast Ohio to close some buildings that lacked adequate air conditioning. Temperatures and humidity were high enough for a Heat Advisory across the area Wednesday.

With electricity restored, affected Baldwin Wallace buildings can return to normal operations. The university’s response focused on restoring the campus electrical network and communicating with students while the work was underway.

No widespread regional utility failure was identified as the cause. Reporting described the problem as a failure within the university’s electrical grid.
