Thousands of FirstEnergy customers lost power Thursday morning as storms moved through parts of Northeast Ohio. The largest concentrations of outages were reported in Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties. WKYC reported that the outages developed as early-morning thunderstorms crossed the region. FirstEnergy crews were dispatched to assess damage and restore electricity. The storms arrived after a stretch of hot and humid weather across Greater Cleveland and surrounding counties, helping create favorable conditions for additional thunderstorm development.
Storms Knock Out Power Across the Region
Residents in affected areas were advised to treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops and stay away from downed power lines. Outage totals can change quickly as crews restore circuits or additional weather moves through the area. The Thursday outages were separate from earlier weather-related disruptions this week. Northeast Ohio has experienced repeated rounds of heat and thunderstorms, with some communities also dealing with school schedule changes and other weather impacts. FirstEnergy serves a large portion of Northeast Ohio through Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison.
Crews Work to Restore Service
Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties were among the areas most affected by the early Thursday outages. Restoration estimates depend on the location and cause of each outage. Fallen limbs, damaged equipment and lightning can all interrupt service during severe weather. Local officials continued monitoring road and utility conditions as storms moved east. Customers can report outages directly to FirstEnergy and check updated restoration estimates through the utility’s outage system. The morning storm activity also came as forecasters continued warning of additional severe thunderstorms later Thursday, creating the possibility of more outages before the weather pattern improves.
